Pretty unconventional start to a blog I know. Well since this (I'm sure) is going to be the first of many intriguing and intellectually challenging discussions, I would like to first off comment on the new "Timeline" feature facebook has recently launched. As per my discussions with my bro DS, we were not able to formulate a collective opinion either in favor of , or against this new feature. What is certain, however, is that this tool will increase in relevance as the subscribers to facebook (and similar social networks) get younger and as time passes. Since people of my generation typically have had fb for around 3 to 5 years now,we cannot ascertain the exact impact or significance of this new feature yet. But give it one or 2 decades, and one will start to realize how a "timeline" thats tracks a person's life will become the key to investigating one's friends and aquaintances, their interests and hobbies, as well as their associations. Leave alone professional life. This feature will integrate professional networks like linkedn and provide a profile of far more detail than even a resume or cover letter. Our lives will be "exposed" in virtual space and the connectivity generated between users of diverse cultures, socio economic backgrounds, interests, and motifs will be nothing less than phenomenal. In the words of DS
"the man who runs for office in 2050 will have his whole life mapped out. Pretty creepy huh ? "
Well, the future implications of a rapidly intensifing social network is not the purpose of this blog, its merely a test run performed by me in this entry. creepy? why? we are doing it to ourselves. AND its like we leave something about us behind even after we are gone... like our grandchildren can see and read about us and how we lived AND how much cooler we were :P
