Poem - O Malice!

Its 4 am at my new job in a hotel. I am still deep in thought about our previous subject of discussion. Here's is a poem I wrote this year in regards to the impending victory of the underdog. It provides a sense of new beginnings in light of the upcoming new year and the inevitable triumph of goodness and Truth over malice.

Enjoy.

By the way, I haven't forgotten the much awaited 'list' of my observed differences between life in the West vs. East. Will post soon !

 O MALICE!
Blind people dance
to a well-told lie

they don't need to try
imagine a hungry child cry

she s going to be blind too , you know
her Sight, fight and right to life,
unable to grow,
innate friendliness unable to show

you take away her eyes with spite
use unilateral might to assasinate her Right

To know the true source of,
the blind people's fright. They dance to

your tunes, your music, your lies
that seek to dissuade that very right

Meek easy and submit freely you sight-snatchers,
Else when the dance ceases to outweigh free sight

The force of your own lies will gouge out your eyes.

Generation gap or ...... .....?

Love is a dangerous thing. I have been wanting to share a post about family relations for a long time now, particularly since my parents and I have been moving from country to country. The constant shifting of home and culture has invariably led to a shift in priorities between what we consider "family time".

Family time used to be - going out for dinner, watching movies together, intriguing philosophical and metaphysical conversations, and anecdotal counseling that provided sound, inter-generational advice. All of that changed since my family moved to America. Who or what is to blame? Change in lifestyle? American values? Indian values? Lack of reconciliation? My brother's adolescent age?

It’s definitely not love. I think that love is a powerful drug that makes one act irrationally towards the objects of it. (in this case, my family). Yet love is the innermost, ultimate and most gratifying God-given gift that makes one's life fulfilling and meaningful. Wars are fought over the love-hate dialectic, houses are burnt down over ego, marriages are ruined over self-esteem, and juvenile prisons arise out of a lack of familial compromise. Domestic abuse can be attributed to habituation, substance abuse, alcoholism, even self-victimization, battered woman syndrome and narcissism.

Back in the east, a culture evolved from a thousand years of rich historical tradition seems to buffer many of these aspects of modern injustice found in the West. Since I usually criticize India (my beloved country) as this is my homeland and the place I claim to 'know' most about (we cannot truly "know" anything, more on this later); I am going to shed some light upon the downfalls of the West. And oh yes, believe me, these downfalls are of a different kind - lets call them systemic or institutional.

Without going into too much personal detail (not because I care but more so because the readers surely do not deserve this onslaught of frustration), I would like to discuss the dynamics behind immigrant life. Specifically, in this case of an Indian family trying to find progress, meaning and security in America. (the land of opportunity).

One thing I would like to illuminate for my friends in India about life here in the west : If happiness, social life, collectivity, collaboration, compassion and creativity is what you desire, the West might not necessarily provide that for you.

On the other hand, if you re the sort who likes pure capitalism, quality of life, consumerism, materialistic acquisitions (car, house, I phone, good deals) ; and happiness for you is that, then you must definitely consider migrating. I cannot deny that America is the Godfather of rugged individualism - life here is all about hard work, getting paid and buying the stuff you want. ( not necessarily need, um, well depends) . The systems here - corporate, legal, political and social; are well established mechanisms that do not depend on favoritism and honor system as much as in India, but continue on irrespective of which man heads the ship and manages the crew, or who the crew members are. Again, there remains a lot to be said about how this came into being and how its origins of federalist papers, Bill of Rights, Independence and the U.S Constitution differs greatly from our own country's vast colonial history as well as a rich tradition dating back thousands of years before the British even knew of India's existence.

As I write, I am losing my train of thought about how to synthesize all these ideas into the original thesis of comparing a change in immigrant family relations across two countries, two cultures - one can even say two perspectives.

Please feel free to provide direction and navigate my random thoughts. My next post will be a list of what I feel is a comparison between North America and India based on my personal experience.

Stay tuned :)

"Ignorance is bliss" - Wikileaks begs to differ

It is my strong conviction that progress is driven by those who choose to be different, not for the sake of being different but for the purpose of truth and justice. This invariably requires them to willingly suffer mockery and ridicule from friends and family, threats from authority and threats from any institution that risks jeopardizing its own survival or harming self-interest.

Ignorance of the vast array of terrible injustice occurring behind the backs of trusting and supportive people, in my view, must be battled and most definitely overcome. All the political science theorizing, prisoner's dilemma, and zero- sum rationalizing put aside, the Truth must win. Only then there will be progress. I have been often told by others that it’s a waste to spend time and energy on things we cannot change... But if we all thought like that, nothing in this world would ever change. Progress is determined by those who choose to suffer and be seen as different.. not just for the sake of being cool but for the sake of making our world a better place. This is my view of activist journalism and is at the core of why I disagree with naysayers of  wikileaks. It is not an organization built upon extracting revenge or causing shit or lighting fires... they are lighting a torch in a cave full of forgotten corpses.

A modern day example of this metaphorical 'torch' is wikileaks. I have much respect for their operations and have been following them for the past year. I have decided to post the link to the 60 minutes interview of Steve Kroft's 2 part interview with Julian Assange - the founder, editor-in chief and director of wikileaks. Enjoy folks, and I urge you to think about why we  have forgotten the hundreds of thousands of corpses. Was it worth it?

Poem - published by Poetry Institute of Canada in 2011 anthology "Fire and Light"

TRUTH
This time your eye
Fades away into the macro as I
Gaze into your world of innocence, prominence
And a pre ordained providence
It dwarfs in compassionate capacity
My self inflicted desire for dominance.
It is Me who is vulnerable my friend,
As I fail to decode the world
In your eyes of truth,
For mine are a shade bit hazy and grey

The Godliness within us

This post will undoubtedly generate much spite among people who consider themselves religious, as I am going to firstly clarify that it is not my intention to offend those who choose to be willfully ignorant. This is for those who have opened their minds to question the true effect of religiosity on their lives, may it be positive or otherwise. Primarily, it is my contention that there is definitely a God, or a supreme force that feeds the magnificent organic earth and the incredible diversity of beings that inhabit it. More specifically, the conditions for life have been fulfilled in such a delicate and intricate balance, that it seems unreasonable (through scientific method) that such a situation has occurred by a statistical probability. We should call it divine chance!

Simply put, my view on this topic is that God exists. Whichever way we have been bred to view the world, we cannot ignore the simple fact that life is not an accident. Overwhelming evidence of intelligent design indicates that right from the inter stellar and planetary distances; to the molecular composition and peculiar properties of water; an earthworm digging its way into making soil more fertile and aerated; wounds healing themselves through dead cells being replaced; the temperature of the earth being regulated by winds and rain; the long and sequential food chain of animals (much ruined by human plundering); the processes of childbearing and nurturing; and even the domestication of animals. What all these phenomena have in common is the unique and relentless affinity towards creation and sustenance of life at every level. Starting from a molecular and cellular level to the amazing astronomical ones of billions of starts and many galaxies just like our Milky Way, this makes even a moderately scientific mind like mine "deduce" the existence of intelligent design.

Since I am neither an expert on science nor in religion, I will refrain from using complex terminology or quote from verse (more on that later - the reconciling of science and spirituality based on ancient and modern knowledge merits a post for itself.)

The point I'm trying to drive is that one doesn't have to be religious to believe in God. God is in everything conscious (maybe even in inanimate things, I'm led to believe) and/ or everything that we put our human consciousness into. You might say this point of view exaggerates the purpose and relevance of our human lives, and over glorifies us and Godly beings. Nothing can be further from the truth. I am trying to say, in fact, that God (or whatever we might choose to call such a force) is so mighty and great that its presence is not ignored even in the smallest of beings. In other words, there is a little bit of God in everyone and everything. This perspective helps me move past imagining God as a superhuman He or She (as depicted by most modem religions) and more towards the unbelievably divine dance of consciousness ( I read that in a book, will quote as soon as I remember).

The scale of things must be clarified before I proceed. It has been observed and hypothesized that our earth is equivalent to a grain of sand in the vast and highly dense universe. Now if our whole earth is a gain of sand with a miniscule proportion of Godliness in it, imagine the significance of each individual life. Practically insignificant, it appears. What makes us significant? - I say God does. Although God has made us very small with respect to this great dance (physics is now speculating whether the universe is expanding or imploding, and in what direction) the catch is that God have given us humans a MIND which is of almost infinite potential. It is through our minds we see the world, realize, and analyze and prophesize about our surroundings. It is the unbelievable filter through which every piece of matter observed must pass in order to be believed and 'considered'. Thus it follows that as a minimum duty to our existence we must attempt to enrich and broaden it according to its vast capacity. We might not be able to answer the big questions of "what are we?" and "why are we here? " but we at least have the capacity to dedicate our lives in exercising and uplifting this amazing God given tool. (Our brain).

Now here's my issue with religion. Religion does exactly the opposite of all that is mentioned above. It shuts the brain, controls masses of people by claiming one objective truth, and preys on their fear by warning of hell or bad karma or other future troubles that inhibit one's pursuit of the truth. Moreover, and more importantly, unlike the wonderful examples of mutually co existent life forms created by God, religion is a cult of stagnant verse passed on from thousands of years. It was started by PEOPLE (imperfections and inconsistencies within scripture while lead most to realize how God did not provide it) for the purpose of controlling others through fear, and through the patronizing and criticism of those either without, or of a different faith.

So if there is anything I have to claim to the world is to wake up my friends. Science and God are not at odds with each other; science is merely our exercise of our God given intellectual and deductive capacities in search of Truth. Religion can only be a path to God for those who are mature enough to realize its humanly imperfect nature or for those who are bound to be enlightened through their pre-ordained gifts of reflection.

In short, no holy man talks to God more than you can. If he claims so, it is either because he's crazy or because he is very knowledgeable and wise and not because he prayed a certain number of times a day, ate a certain food, etc., but because he chose to use his ultimate God given gift. Finally, if he tells you to take up arms or resort to any form of violence or abuse in defense of this atrocity called religion; he's crazy and must be scorned.

I assume this post has provided considerable fodder for debate and discussion, feel free to hammer me with comments. And for all my highly devout friends - I'm a lover, not a hater. So please feel to contribute too, don’t antagonize yourselves.

Privacy is fictional. It doesn't exist

Pretty unconventional start to a blog I know. Well since this (I'm sure) is going to be the first of many intriguing and intellectually challenging discussions, I would like to first off comment on the new "Timeline" feature facebook has recently launched. As per my discussions with my bro DS, we were not able to formulate a collective opinion either in favor of , or against this new feature. What is certain, however, is that this tool will  increase in relevance as the subscribers to facebook (and similar social networks) get younger and as time passes. Since people of my generation typically have had fb for around 3 to 5 years now,we cannot ascertain the exact impact or significance of this new feature yet. But give it one or 2 decades, and one will start to realize how a "timeline" thats tracks a person's life will become the key to investigating one's friends and aquaintances, their interests and hobbies, as well as their associations. Leave alone professional life. This feature will integrate  professional networks like linkedn and provide a profile of far more detail than even a resume or cover letter. Our lives will be "exposed" in virtual space and the connectivity generated between users of diverse cultures, socio economic backgrounds, interests, and motifs will be nothing less than phenomenal. In the words of DS

"the man who runs for office in 2050 will have his whole life mapped out. Pretty creepy huh ? "

Well, the future implications of a rapidly intensifing social network is not the purpose of this blog, its merely a test run performed by me in this entry. Stay tuned for more discussions and feel free to comment. I encourage questions and concerns about interesting and contemporary topics. The purpose of this blog is to generate a livening and enlightening discourse for anyone who wants to move past the mundane distractions of everyday work (and student) life to the next level of inquiry and critical intermingling. Hoping to bust some stress through revelation.

See you soon folks.
